# What Stripe fees cost you on a payment plan

Stripe takes a percentage plus a fixed fee every time a payment succeeds. Split a booking into four instalments and you pay that fixed fee four times instead of once. The free calculator on this page shows the fee on each payment, what actually reaches your bank, and what the split costs compared with taking the whole amount up front. No sign-up.

## The short answer

Splitting a payment barely changes what Stripe charges you.

- The percentage applies to the amount charged, not to the number of charges. Four charges of £300 attract the same percentage as one charge of £1,200.
- The fixed fee is the only part that repeats. One per successful payment.
- So a plan with N payments costs (N - 1) extra fixed fees compared with a single payment.

On a UK Stripe account the fixed fee is 20p. A £1,200 booking split into a deposit plus three payments costs 60p more than taking £1,200 in one go.

## Worked example

A £1,200 booking on a UK Stripe account, 25% deposit, three payments after it, paid by a standard UK card at 1.5% + 20p:

| Payment | Charged | Stripe fee | You receive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit | £300.00 | £4.70 | £295.30 |
| Payment 1 | £300.00 | £4.70 | £295.30 |
| Payment 2 | £300.00 | £4.70 | £295.30 |
| Final balance | £300.00 | £4.70 | £295.30 |
| **Total** | **£1,200.00** | **£18.80** | **£1,181.20** |

One single payment of £1,200 would cost £18.20. Splitting it into four costs 60p more.

Add Planpacer's 1% per successful payment-plan transaction (£12.00 on this booking) and you receive £1,169.20, which is 2.57% all in.

## Stripe's published rates

Read from Stripe's pricing pages for the UK, Ireland and the United States on 30 July 2026. Your rate depends on the country your Stripe account is registered in and on the card the customer pays with. Accounts on custom pricing will differ.

**UK account (GBP), fixed fee 20p**

| Card | Rate |
|---|---|
| UK card | 1.5% + 20p |
| UK premium card | 2.8% + 20p |
| European card | 2.5% + 20p |
| International card | 3.15% + 20p |

**Eurozone account (EUR), fixed fee €0.25**

| Card | Rate |
|---|---|
| European card | 1.5% + €0.25 |
| European premium card | 2.8% + €0.25 |
| UK card | 2.5% + €0.25 |
| International card | 3.15% + €0.25 |

**US account (USD), fixed fee $0.30**

| Card | Rate |

Currency conversion adds 2% on a UK or eurozone account, and 1% on a US account.

## What the calculator does

The interactive tool on this page (available at the canonical URL) takes:

- Your Stripe account region (United Kingdom, eurozone or United States)
- Total booking value
- Deposit as a percentage of the total or a fixed amount
- Number of payments after the deposit
- The card the customer pays with, or a rate you type in yourself
- Whether Stripe converts the currency
- Whether to include the Planpacer fee

It returns a per-payment table of what is charged, what Stripe takes, what Planpacer takes and what lands in your account, plus the total, the effective all-in percentage and a comparison against one single payment. Every rate field is editable so the tool still works after Stripe changes its pricing.

## What this does not cover

Failed payments cost nothing at Stripe, so a retry that succeeds is charged once. Disputes are billed separately. Refunds do not return the original fee. Payment methods other than cards are priced differently.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do payment plans cost more in Stripe fees than a single payment?

Slightly. Stripe charges a percentage plus a fixed fee on every successful payment. The percentage lands on the same total either way, so the only extra cost is the fixed fee on each additional payment. A UK account splitting a booking into four payments pays three extra fixed fees of 20p, so 60p in total.

### How much extra does each instalment cost?

One fixed fee. That is 20p on a UK Stripe account, 25 cents on a euro account and 30 cents on a US account. The percentage rate does not change, because it applies to the amount charged rather than the number of charges.

### Which Stripe rate applies to my account?

It depends on the country your Stripe account is registered in and the card the customer pays with. A UK account pays 1.5% plus 20p on a standard UK card, 2.5% plus 20p on a European card and 3.15% plus 20p on an international card. Currency conversion adds 2% on top. Every rate in the calculator is editable, so you can enter whatever your account is actually charged.

### Does Planpacer add a fee on top of Stripe?

Yes, 1% per successful payment-plan transaction, on top of the standard Stripe fees your account already pays. There is no monthly subscription. Setup is a concierge launch from EUR 199.

### Who does the customer pay?

You. The money moves through your own Stripe account, so payouts, refunds and disputes stay with you exactly as they do today. Planpacer never holds the funds and never stores card details.

### Are the rates in this calculator current?

The defaults were read from Stripe's published pricing pages for the UK, Ireland and the United States on 30 July 2026. Stripe changes its pricing from time to time and your account may be on custom rates, so check your own pricing and edit the rate fields if the numbers differ.
